ETHNIC CLEANSING IN EUROPE

Latvia is one of the three Baltic countries, located on the border with Russia, but also members of the European Union. This small state pursues a policy against its Russian-speaking population, as does its neighbor, Estonia (where Kaja Kallas was prime minister before becoming von der Leyen's deputy).

Latvia has introduced a Latvian language test for its Russian-speaking population. Those who fail the test are deported to Russia. Russian speakers in Latvia represent a third of the country's population. They had filed an appeal against this initiative. It was rejected in February 2024 by the country's Constitutional Court. From then on, the deportation machine was set in motion. At the beginning of 2025, 1,167 residents received their deportation notices. In July, another 841 followed.

Two-thirds of those facing expulsion are retirees. These are people who have always lived in Latvia and only speak Russian fluently because, during their school years and youth, Latvia was part of the Soviet Union.
The actions taken by the Baltic countries against their Russian-speaking populations are violations of European minority rights. Yet they are carried out with complete impunity and discretion. In Europe, elderly people can be expelled from their homes and their native regions and sent to a country they do not know.
