Recently there has been some strange posts about me. calling my timeline harassing and "#sealioning." !? Also called me a racist.

My timeline focuses on tech and coding. "Sealioning" is new to me; my aim has always been genuine discussion, never harassment. I was shocked how the conversation degraded into swearing, name-calling, and instablocking, which doesn't help anyone.

If anyone thinks I'm wrong here let me know. Let's keep it respectful and open to constructive dialogue.

A black Mastodon user was talking about the well documented problems, hostilities, and frustrations that black users uniquely experience in the fediverse. Hopping in with “I’ve experienced racism too!” doesn’t help, and came off as if you were trying to redirect or derail the conversation away from the black experience.

And that is basically the definition of sealioning, by the way: hopping into a conversation, even if well intentioned (although sealioning often isn’t), with a comment that is not actually related to the conversation.

To be painfully clear: I don’t think anyone is disbelieving your experience, and we aren’t getting into it now. It is besides the point. That conversation was/is about the challenges black people have on Mastodon, and the frustrations they’ve had in trying to fix them.

@Yisrael Dov :emacs: :nixos: What I mean is, they normally won't have a conversation with you/me once they determine you/me as a Nazi, racist, bigoted or whatever name-calling they do. I had the same posts about me without being able to tell them how wrong they are. I never once said, that I "hate LGBTQ, fat people, Black people". My wife is from Zambia and I still was called a racist ... Even when all your friends are Black people, they still call you a racist. Just ignore them and wait 2 weeks.
