What does Thumb Down mean?
!Friendica Support
How should we use the Thumbs Down reaction emoji? To express our feelings about the content of the post (eg. oh god what has Trump done now) or to condemm the post itself as spam or inappropriate?
I've been afraid to use this thumbs down, but there are a lot of valuable posts I don't want to give a thumbs up to.
Are there any consequences to posts getting thumbs down i.e. are they flagged for moderator attention?

I've disliked things and haven't seen any reports, and I just did both a test report from my other account, and disliked something from my other account. The report showed up, but not the dislike. Feel free to give this a thumbs down to see if remote thumbs-downing functions differently, though.
As a user I don't use it much, I just scroll past most things. When I've used it it was just to mark things I didn't want to see again. Hell, you can like *and* dislike a post at the same time. Not sure what the function is, especially since the broader fediverse doesn't get them, though people on Friendica will on posts that come from Friendica afaik

It has replaced it with a more expressive collection of emojis so one can express surprise, sadness, support, or anger at the content of a post without implying objection to the existence of the post itself. Maybe Friendica should move that way too - at it seems the thumb down is not very useful at all atm.
Not that we want to be toxic like Facebook, but I don't think there's that danger since we don't have their algorithm. I like giving and getting a reaction to show that a post is seen and appreciated, without making a comment just for the sake of making a comment. Otherwise it feels like posting into a void with no sense of community or engagement.

Using it to show disagreement on content or to express dislike for the information itself.
It can be used for to vote on things.

Thx for explaining these details for those out here in the fedi that might misunderstand.
As pointed out:
This consideration is not about same categories but how often an option is used and how useful it is. Staring -> bookmarking, especially in combination with the settings for expiration of posts is quite important, and actually only available in initial posts, not answers. It deserves to be a one click option.

We don't really have any way to know how most people are using Friendica though. And there are multiple themes with different User Interfaces. Without that usage data the organization of the UI needs to follow some logical order, like what category a tool belongs to, what purpose it serves, who the audience is, etc.
I've been working on a new theme and the hardest part has been trying to figure out how to organize the UI. Initially I had the Star with the Action Buttons because my starting point was Vier and that's where that theme puts it. But I ended up moving it to the "More" menu like Frio because logically as a personalized control for posts it belonged there with saving to a folder or adding a tag. Post actions only you see. While the Action Buttons are all things both you and others see.
I toyed with the idea of switching it from a star icon (which is confusing given stars mean something else on Mastodon) to a "bookmark" icon and then putting it on the top corner of each post (open if not yet bookmarked, solid if bookmarked, like on Bluesky). Which would raise it to one-click access and make it a lot more obvious what it does. But then I'd also have to change the wording elsewhere. My theme project is still very much a work-in-progress though.

Sounds good for me.

Same goes for bookmark (Lesezeichen) instead of staring, somehow "to stare" is quite an anoying behavior.
Even tho I played around a lot with vier and quattro I ended up going for FRIO cause it looked to me that that is what @Michael ๐บ๐ฆ in any case is using and I got the feeling that I couldn't figure out if everything was working in every UI.
Also, having few coders already and than distributing the efforts on several UI looked and looks like overkill. Actually I came to the point to consider and claim to have only one UI and in any case make the rest as addons somehow. Like in phpBB. What I truly don't like in FRIO is that there is a lot of unused space on the right, or I haven't found "the button" to free that space and have it for nice wide text pages. Ultimately once you become used to a layout you stop chasing around relearning again and again location of buttons and stuff. In any case inbetween friendica, diaspora, mastodon, peertube, castopod and so on and so forth plus APP's, and KDE, XFCE, LXDE and what not, my head is already quite tilted.
Just need KISS, and things working, no more changes.
Even the whole emoji stuff is already anoying. Just gimme the basics, I'll drop them in my quickComment in one line:
๐ ๐ have a look at this! ๐ ๐ฎ ๐ ๐ค ๐ ๐คฆโโ๏ธ
and that's it.
Well and of course my very own gif emojies, just lined up line by line in the quickComments ..
